How Was the NIV Bible Created?

The New International Version Bible started its journey when an engineer named Howard Long saw a need for a contemporary translation of the Bible that made God’s Word more accessible to the average Christian reader.

The translation process began in 1965. The first publication was The Gospel According to John, a contemporary English translation of the verses in the Book of John. The complete New International Version was first published in 1978 by the New York Bible Society (now Biblica). The translation committee used original manuscripts from the Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic languages to study and create text in English that was accurate, beautiful, clear, and dignified. Since its original publication, there have been two new updates to the translation, in 1984 and 2011.

The 15-member Biblica translation committee still meets every year and is committed to an accurate and reliable rendering of God’s Word that is clear to read and understand.
